looking into getting an aluminium pergola for our backyard

Hey everyone, I’m looking into getting an aluminium pergola for our backyard. The weather here is totally unpredictable—sunny one hour and raining the next—so I want something that can handle both. I’ve read about waterproof canopies and UV protection, but I’m not sure what features actually make a difference in real life. Do they really keep you dry and cool, or is it all marketing talk? Any honest experiences appreciated.

You're definitely on the right track asking about this. We installed an aluminium pergola last spring, and I can say it’s made a huge difference for us. We live near the coast, so the pergola has to deal with salty air, random rain showers, and surprisingly strong sun even in winter. The one we got has a waterproof, slanted roof with built-in drainage—which honestly I didn’t think I’d care about until the first storm hit. It kept everything underneath bone dry. And when the sun’s out, the coated aluminium and UV-blocking panels help keep it comfortably shaded without turning the space into a sauna.

One thing I’d recommend is looking for models with side screens or the option to add them later. We didn’t get them at first, but now I’m regretting it—wind still finds a way in. If you're curious, I came across this collection when we were still choosing: https://closethedeal.co.uk/catalogs/pergola-gazebo . They’ve got a good range with decent weather resistance, so might be worth a look if you're comparing.
