The Three Trinities for 2024: A Flexible Approach to New Year’s Resolutions
As the new year unfolds, the familiar ritual of setting resolutions returns. Some embrace it with optimism, others with hesitation. I’ve come to believe that resolutions should evolve with us — not rigid goals to confine our progress, but flexible guideposts that shape our growth. This year, I’m centering my aspirations around what I call the Three Trinities: Books, Miles, and Matters of the Heart. These are the cornerstones of how I want to grow in 2024 — intellectually, physically, and emotionally keep new years resolution.
1. Books – Feeding the Mind
Books have always been my compass, offering insight, escape, and reflection. In 2024, I’m committing to reading more deeply, not just widely. This means fewer rushed checkmarks on reading lists and more intentional engagement with ideas that challenge and expand me.
Whether it’s fiction that stirs empathy, biographies that inspire resilience, or nonfiction that reframes how I see the world, books remind me that growth starts with curiosity. If you’re setting reading goals this year, consider choosing titles that nurture your inner world, not just your bookshelf.
Suggested intention: Read 12 books — one each month — with the goal of internal transformation over completion.
2. Miles – Strengthening the Body and Spirit
Running. Walking. Hiking. Biking. Whatever form it takes, movement is my reset button. In tracking miles, I’m not chasing numbers for the sake of achievement but creating a consistent rhythm that supports mental clarity and physical vitality.
The beauty of a mile is its simplicity — it meets you wherever you are. Whether it’s a quiet dawn walk or a weekend trail run, movement clears space for thought and gratitude. It’s less about athleticism and more about presence.
Suggested intention: Log weekly movement — perhaps 10–20 miles — not as pressure, but as a way to stay grounded.
3. Matters of the Heart – Cultivating Relationships and Purpose
This trinity is the most abstract yet most essential. It’s about love in all its forms: nurturing friendships, showing up for family, and deepening self-understanding. It’s also about purpose — how we connect our hearts to our actions.
In 2024, I’m focusing on being more present in my relationships, expressing appreciation more freely, and listening more deeply. I want to make room for difficult conversations and joyful celebrations alike.
Suggested intention: Once a week, take one intentional action to invest in a relationship — a phone call, a handwritten note, a spontaneous act of kindness.
Embracing Flexibility and Meaning
Resolutions aren’t contracts; they’re invitations. Life will interrupt even our best plans — and that’s okay. What matters is that we keep returning to what feels meaningful. By framing 2024 through these Three Trinities, I’m giving myself room to evolve while staying anchored in what matters most.
